Corrections Volunteer Program

The Johnson County Department of Corrections relies on compassionate, open-minded, and supportive community volunteers to help bridge the gap between clients and the community they will be returning to. 

Dedicated volunteers and paid staff believe change is possible and work in partnership to help clients find a way out of the system and into a better life.

Things to know about volunteering

  • Volunteers shall be 21 or older and sufficiently mature to handle the responsibilities involved
  • Must complete Initial Training (followed by annual recertification thereafter)
    • Pending criminal charges are ineligible/li>
    • Past convictions require approval from the Director of Corrections
    • Must be off of all supervision for a minimum of 1 year before applying
  • Initial TB test (followed by annual TB test thereafter)
  • Physical (Juvenile Detention Only)

To enhance and expand the services and programs for clients, Johnson County Department of Corrections (JCDOC) recruits and screens potential volunteers for the purpose of blending client needs with services available from the community, including roles as advisors and interpreters, while ensuring the safety of all parties. The responsibilities of volunteers shall be clearly defined in order that services provided and operational requirements are coordinated. Staff shall provide assistance to volunteers in the coordination of these efforts.

Once steps one and two are completed, and you have been processed, you will receive an email from the Program Coordinator with login information to get started with training.
